Analysis Paralysis

Every path has its pitfalls.

When you spend too much time thinking about all the negative possibilities, you never make a move. Options are good, but we can analyze those options to death. Why? You will inevitably find challenges and pitfalls to each path. 

You want a good option, one that doesn’t have a lot of downsides. So when you see the downsides, you put that option on delay. You look at other options. But then with your next option, you repeat the pattern. Before long, you’ve fallen into the paralysis of analysis. 

Here’s the thing. Every path has its pitfalls. Every direction you choose has downsides. Every option will have opposition. You can either wait forever for the perfect path (which does not exist). Or you can make a move, knowing that the path won’t be perfect. 

How do you decide? Assess the risks and commitment? If something is low risk and low commitment, you may be over analyzing the option. But if it is high risk and high commitment, you do need to spend your time thinking it through. 

It helps to gauge how much energy you should be putting in the decision making process. Put a deadline on your decision making. Decide now how long you’re going to take to choose a path. When the deadline hits, make a move. There are no perfect paths. 

Use wisdom. Seek counsel. But don’t be afraid of imperfect paths. Sometimes moving is more important than figuring out which way to move.

Assists

Are you quick to give it up? 

A BYU study on basketball teams and their outcomes found that when it comes to winning,  passing the ball to make a basket is more important than actually taking the shot. The more assists a team has, the more likely a team will win.

We know this to be true by looking at who earned the most assists in the NBA 2020-2021 season. With 684 assists, it was Lebron James who led the Lakers to their 17th championship ring. If you want to win, you have to give it up. 

When members of an organization put more focus on assisting each other than on their personal stats, they tend to go further faster. 

What do assists look like in your business? It could look like helping others in small ways that add large value. Passing the ball could look like stepping outside of your role to support a team member who could use an extra set of hands. By anticipating the needs of the team, you will be alley-ooping nonstop.

How to Leave Your Job Well

Apx. 2 million people will quit their job this month. 

It’s a staggering number but what’s even more shocking is how many of those people won’t be honest with their company as to why they are quitting.   

All companies have what we call “trouble trends.”  These trends could be addressed and fixed, but often aren’t.  It begs the question….why not?

One of the main reasons is that people are afraid to be honest.  They don’t feel they are in an environment that promotes openness, and they aren’t asked for their feedback.  As leaders, this presents a great opportunity. It’s time to start considering how we can make feedback a part of our processes. 

If you are one of the two million who are taking your grand exit this month, tell your boss the real reason why...not the kind of real reason.  

When you are honest about why you are leaving, you are becoming a catalyst for good change.  Give those you’re leaving behind the opportunity to have what you did not have...you like some of those people?  Do what’s best for them. 

You are also practicing the great skill of giving helpful feedback. One in a million people do that really well...that one person is someone who practices it...let that be you.

Efficiency is Excellence

Do it nice, or do it twice. 

Efficiency is the key to improving results. Efficiency is carrying out the most important tasks, well and with appropriate energy. This leads to best possible results. 

When we complete tasks correctly, we meet success sooner.  The opposite is true too— when we fail at a task, it takes time and energy to reverse that failure. That leads to less productivity, and overuse of resources.

How can we best achieve efficiency to make sure our tasks get done with excellence?  

  1. Visualize your goal, and the steps it will take to achieve that goal.  This action will help you develop a roadmap to completing each necessary task correctly. 

  2. Set deadlines for your tasks. You are more likely to act in line with what needs to get done if you schedule a specific amount of time to complete the task.  

  3. Hold yourself accountable— you are your best champion and your worst critic, and analyzing the good and bad of your strategy regularly will ensure efficiency.

Hot tip: set aside an hour every two weeks to review the tasks you set and how they went.  Take this time to celebrate your progress, and to analyze where you can improve.
